On cozy Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank, just down the block from Porto’s Bakery, lies an even more delicious treat for the morbidly-minded: Dark Delicacies, the nation’s one and only horror-themed bookstore.

Founders Sue and Del Howison opened up for business in 1994 with a mere $5000 behind them, at first stocking the fledgling shop with their own personal and difficult to part with collection of books and memorabilia. Since then they’ve changed locations three times, but have always remained a vital part of the same Burbank neighborhood. The current storefront at 5312 W Magnolia is their largest (and coolest) venue yet: a cavernous space stuffed from floor to ceiling with everything to make a genre fan drool.

Upon entering visitors are greeted with an array of clothing, collectibles, and creepy crafts, ranging from antiques and handmade jewelry to a vast selection of essential oils custom-blended by the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, which debuts new scents in-store on the occasion of each full moon. Dark Delicacies regularly hosts signings with the biggest names in horror and fantasy, so be sure to check out their calendar of events.

And then there are the books, the graphic novels, and the DVDs— a genuine treasure trove of terror. Del’s knowledge of their stock is encyclopedic, and horror is something he takes seriously. He’s written books himself, edited three Dark Delicacies anthologies featuring contributors such as Ray Bradbury and Clive Barker, and appeared in more than a dozen movies. Most recently he’s begun writing a column on the process of adapting horror books into horror films for the website FEARnet.com.

The Howisons’ definition of their favorite genre is broad and inclusive, encompassing everything from Casper the Friendly Ghost to The Silence of the Lambs. While you can certainly find the latest vampire bestseller on their shelves, they also love helping people discover great books and authors they may not have heard about yet. The store they started more than fifteen years ago still houses their own personal collection, only now it’s become a collection that constantly evolves and revolves. Stop in and let them introduce you to your next nightmare!
