Halloween merch junkies rejoice! The 99 Cents Store in Silver Lake at Sunset Junction FINALLY put out the goods yesterday. It’s early so things were a little subdued in terms of what was on the shelves and what was moving (hardly anything.) Another guy grabbed a couple horror movie DVDs, as did I. (Another post about them coming.) I also scored a set of groovy purple mini-lights.
Favorite item: Definitely the styrofoam mini-skulls.

Not all dollar stores are the same animal. I live in the South Bay (Yes, that nicet beachy area just below LAX on the map-LA County not San Fran!) and have been on the Halloween stake out for 3 weeks.
I noticed that this year the 99 Cents Store had more an more interesting things of really nice quality for that bargain price! I think they may have bought out the Job Lot from Great Land or some such.
The one in Torrance has a nice mix of novelties/decorations: streamers, candle holders, plaques and signs, lights, really great silver skull candles that will be perfect for Day of the Dead and nice quality servers/cups/candly bowls–kitchen stuff. I am into skulls/skellies and there was a lot to choose from this year. A must stock up on item is the skull and crossbones candy or tea tins. A favorite for that next house-warming gift is a plastic hinged salad server: you know that sort of fork and spooncombo, that lookes like skeleton arms. Also look for the Day of the Dead looking skeleton ceramic candle holders. Lots of lightweight statues (gargoyles/skellies/reapers) and small foam tombstones, rubber bats, bugs and body parts….etc. Yep, they have dvds and spooky sound cds: old fashioned horror double features and singlets: Little Shop of Horrors, Bucket of Blood and Carnaval of Souls, etc. sound effects and creepy classical music were my faves….all good to give as treats for the psyche!
The costume items/accessories are a bit better than last year but still cheaply made and mainly kids stuff. Candy is the usual cheap stuff with no SKELLY POPS! BOO–I’ve looked in all the usual places and can’t find Skelly Pops this year. Any leads?
There are too many diverse decorations to list but I found the dollar store had much better and cheaper things than Big Lots* (sort of a bust this year, peeps.) and Target (the last time I looked–2 weeks back).
Halloween socks and stretchy gloves are hidden on the clothes aisle–so don’t miss them.
The Lawndale 99 cents store on Hawthorne Blvd. had some of the same but not at much diversity–still worth a stop.
Luckily, I work in Venice and stopped by the Venice store on Washington Blvd. which had the most and best stock of stuff yet. Including the best thing ever bought at a dollar store–a mask of someone who epitomizes the holiday. I can say no more, cuz I bought most of them and plan to give them out as presents for Hallows. You’ll just have to check it out yourself!
* Other stores to check out for Halloween on the Cheap but Good are Big Lots, Cost Plus, chain Drug Stores and for the real decoration (higher priced) deal STATS in Redondo Beach on Artesia Blvd.
** The Halloween Fashion Make-up is out there in the Drug Stores. Grab the Wet and Wild Skull Ring lip gloss in Black, Red and Glow in the Dark while you can!
Thanks for the info! I’ll be getting around to other cheapo-creepo stores as the season progresses. At some point you MUST tell us which famous person that mask is of. The mind reels with possibilities. I have a hunch…
Emm.. You bring out the best of my moist determination Sorry, for off top, i wanna tell one joke) Why do birds fly south for the winter? It’s quicker than driving.
