Costume File/Kids

by It Came from New York on September 16, 2007

With having a kid somewhere near the bottom of my to-do list, I sometimes wonder how the parental mind functions.

For instance, how does one motivate their young offspring to aspire to noble professions? Is the logic of opposites the dynamic? If I want to inspire my child to strive to be, say, a reality show star or a gangsta rapper, should I try to steer them into wearing a cheap polypropylene miniature doctor scrubs costume or an embarrassingly phony-looking little cop outfit on Halloween?

Does this turn humiliation into a warm and cuddly feeling? Would I be able, if it were the case, to acknowledge I was living vicariously through them?

I stood in aisle five at the 99 Cents Store recently, pondering, in my rich and vivid fantasy life.
