Cellcam Journal: Early action

by It Came from New York on September 9, 2008

With seven weeks to Halloween, Los Angeles is already percolating with anticipation that spans the budget you either have or don’t have on hand.

Top left: British fashion designer Alexander McQueen’s Melrose Place shop has these perfect skull scarves for those who spare no expense when it comes to accessorizing.

Top right: The Kragen auto parts store that was on Sunset and Fountain in Silver Lake is gone, replaced with one of those temporary Halloween costume shops that I have a low tolerance for; opening today.

Bottom left: The low end merch is starting to trickle into the 99 Cents Only Stores; for example…

Bottom right: Paging Heidi Klum: Has Project Runway ever thought of sending their design hopefuls to the 99 Cents Only Store for inspiration? Can you imagine an entire outfit encrusted with these black faux silk roses, five to a bunch for that magic price?

Creepy’s Greatest Hits: Cheapo Creepo

by It Came from New York on September 8, 2008

Our 99 Cents Only Store recap of some of last year’s favorites…

Even given the sheer numbers of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos devotees and practitioners here, Los Angeles has an unusually large collection of stores catering to costume demands. Maybe that’s to be expected in a city where people routinely slip on and shed facades year round.

Today’s item from the 99 Cents Only Store: Zombie Mother Theresa mask

First Christopher Hitchens’s attack book and now this. When you marry God, you’re asking for trouble.

Cheapo Creepo: Squeezable Plastic Skulls

by It Came from New York on October 4, 2007

Today’s find from the 99 Cents Store…

Skulls are the leitmotif of the 99 Cents Stores. Plastic, styrofoam and ceramic ones fill the shelves this season and get scooped up for Day of the Dead celebrations as well as for Halloween. But anytime of year they are haunting reminders of our own mortality.

Cheapo Creepo: Giant Frog mask

by It Came from New York on September 23, 2007

Today’s item from the 99 Cents Store

With only 38 days until Halloween, it’s never to early to start sussing out your costume. Solo, duo or group this year? We thought we’d get the ball rolling with this duo suggestion and a how-to for the other half from Sylar, the special effects company. Accessorizing is an option too.

[Insert your own frog/handsome prince metaphor here.]

Cheapo Creepo: Party Plates and Napkins

by It Came from New York on September 20, 2007

Today’s favorite items from the 99 Cents Store

I’m the type of guy who could use these matching spider web paper plates and napkins everyday, year round, but that’s just me. It’s a good thing I have a dishwasher or I would have gone through an entire rainforest’s worth of them by now.

Nothing says “Bite my damn neck, already,” like a day-glo green rubber bat.

Cheapo Creepo: B Horror movies on DVD

by It Came from New York on September 18, 2007

B Horror movies are startlingly cheap at the 99 Cents Stores again this year. They’re even pushing the cheap envelope by offering some DVDs that have a double feature plus a vintage cartoon. Directors such as Roger Corman, Wes Craven and Mario Caiano are represented as well as stars like Boris Karloff, Jack Nicholson (The Terror and Little Shop of Horrors, both directed by Corman) and the legendary Barbara Steele, who scared the pants off me in Black Sunday in my innocent youth.

Costume File/Kids

by It Came from New York on September 16, 2007

With having a kid somewhere near the bottom of my to-do list, I sometimes wonder how the parental mind functions.

For instance, how does one motivate their young offspring to aspire to noble professions? Is the logic of opposites the dynamic? If I want to inspire my child to strive to be, say, a reality show star or a gangsta rapper, should I try to steer them into wearing a cheap polypropylene miniature doctor scrubs costume or an embarrassingly phony-looking little cop outfit on Halloween?

Does this turn humiliation into a warm and cuddly feeling? Would I be able, if it were the case, to acknowledge I was living vicariously through them?

I stood in aisle five at the 99 Cents Store recently, pondering, in my rich and vivid fantasy life.

Cheapo Creepo: Styro Mini-skulls

by It Came from New York on September 15, 2007

Halloween merch junkies rejoice! The 99 Cents Store in Silver Lake at Sunset Junction FINALLY put out the goods yesterday. It’s early so things were a little subdued in terms of what was on the shelves and what was moving (hardly anything.) Another guy grabbed a couple horror movie DVDs, as did I. (Another post about them coming.) I also scored a set of groovy purple mini-lights.
Favorite item: Definitely the styrofoam mini-skulls.
