Fans of Syfy’s “Face Off” will get to go “face to face” with their favorite creations from the show at Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Night’s new maze, “Face Off: In the Flesh.” (Fans going to Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights will find an elaborate scare zone based on the same material, but with a whole different take).
Now entering its seventh season, “Face Off” is a reality/competition series that has special effects makeup artists from around the world compete for who can make the best creation based on a different theme or challenge in each episode, providing Halloween Horror Nights teams on both coasts with plenty of material to play with.
“Since 2011, @FaceOffSyfy has featured the amazing creativity of up and coming make up artists, creating movie worthy characters,” Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights’ Creative Director John Murdy explained via Twitter. “Now the best of the best of @FaceOffSyfy characters will be realized ‘in the flesh’ in a new maze experience at HHN! 22 of them!”
“We went through every character ever created for the show and grouped them into themes/scenes that could work for HHN,” Murdy tweeted.
Murdy promised not to reveal too much, but revealed some of the creations that will be in the maze. “One is insect-human hybrids! That stuff freaks me out hope it freaks you out! Designs are insane!”
And another: “I’ve been obsessed with Alice Wonderland for years, have a Lewis Carroll themed room in my house so love the show’s dark take on Alice!”
In a press release, Universal Studio’s Hollywood wrote that the resulting horrific creations, “will cascade throughout the dark corridors of the terrifying new maze bringing to life multiple incarnations of these select characters and adding to the cast of characters designed to scare the life out of every guest.” A soundtrack will be provided by electro house artist “Figure,” who created music last year for Horror Nights “Universal Monsters Remixed” maze.
At Universal Studios Orlando, an all new street experience will feature ten different character creations inspired designs made on Face Off who will “inhabit five unique and immersive environments within the scare zone, from eerie scarecrows that go to great lengths to protect a spine- chilling farmland to ghoulish brutes that haunt dilapidated castle ruins.”
This is the third major announcement Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights has announced for their 2014 lineup, opening Friday, September 19, and also the third based on a television property. In addition to “Face Off: In the Flesh,” Horror Nights will be bringing back AMC’s “The Walking Dead” for a third consecutive year with the new maze “Walking Dead: End of the Line” – and “Terror Tram: Invaded by the Walking Dead,” and an all new maze inspired by the vampire infused TV series, “From Dusk Till Dawn.” (Of note: Universal Studios Orlando is also creating mazes based on all three properties as well.)
Previously, Halloween Horror Nights announced the fan picked scare-zone, Mask-a-Raid!, where guests will be confronted by a hoard of blood thirsty cannibals masquerading as French aristocrats.
At least three more mazes are anticipated to be announced over the next few weeks before tickets go on sale. For ever breaking news about Halloween Horror Nights, follow creative director John Murder on Twitter at @HalloweenHorrorNights, and of course, CreepyLA.
