Coffin Joe haunts the not-so-Silent Movie screen

José Mojica Marins as Coffin Joe (Zé do Caixão)

Zé do Caixão — that’s “Coffin Joe” to us non-Portuguese-speakers — is Brazil’s most famous horror export, played by writer-director-star José Mojica Marins, and he’s the subject of a series of Cinefamily screenings at L.A.’s own Silent Movie Theater in the month of October.
His eerie low-budget meanderings are the focus of a dedicated cult of horror fans, and love him or hate him, you’ll never forget Coffin Joe.  If you’d like to see what he’s all about, get showtimes at www.cinefamily.org.
(This Friday, 10/16/09, it’s a Coffin Joe triple feature starting at 8 p.m. — DAMNED: THE STRANGE WORLD OF JOSE MOJICA MARINS, THE STRANGE WORLD OF COFFIN JOE, and STRANGE HOSTEL OF NAKED PLEASURES.  Next Friday, 10/23/09, he’s back at 8 p.m. with AWAKENING OF THE BEAST AND FINIS HOMINIS (END OF MAN).  And on Friday, 10/30/09, at 8 p.m. the series finishes with the double feature of EMBODIMENT OF EVIL and HALLUCINATION OF A DERANGED MIND.  All tickets are $12. )
