Art collectors on a budget, especially those with taste for the sweet and macabre, would be remiss in overlooking the illustrations of Karlin Collette. The Los Angeles based artist creates pieces “lovingly executed in pencil and paint” at a cost of around $30-50 for each one of a kind work of art.
“I have always had a fondness for things that evoke mystery and wonder– and are considered to be somewhat on the dark side,” Collette says of the inspiration for her work.
On her early memories of all thing dark, she says, “I remember being young and obsessively planning for Halloween each year with my little sister. We would blast ‘I Put A Spell On You’ by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (off our specially-made Halloween mix tape, of course) and just really have a blast making our costumes, practicing scary make-up on each other and decorating the house with spooky decor. To me, the whimsy of Halloween symbolizes a time to have fun and be a kid again.”
