Alas, a trip to Griffith Observatory’s gift shop turned up more needlessly gender-specific kid costumes. After almost five decades of astronauts who are women, you would think packaging could be made that shows a girl wearing the get-up.
But rest easy, girls, because you can have a little space shuttle purse instead. Astronomy is hard! (Steep price warning: $90 for an astro-kid outfit? 99 Cents Stores have much cheaper options but not astronauts and still with sexist packaging.)
An employee at the gift shop said he had gotten complaints from parents about the costume packaging only depicting boys. He also told me the GO gift shop would be getting a dozen adult-size astronaut costumes on October 26th and that they expect them to fly out of there.
Another costume category that excludes girls after the jump.
As this book sold at the GO gift shop shows, it looks like even dogs get to be astronauts, male dogs like Max, anyway.
Would it sound like I was whining if I quibbled about little terrorist costumes for girls too?
